Ambulance Communications Centre call takers and dispatchers are collectively known as Emergency Medical Dispatchers.

Successful recruits receive comprehensive training before starting work as a call taker. Many progress with additional training to become dispatchers or managers.

The role of a call taker

Call takers are key members of the Communications Centre team. The call taker is responsible for effective and efficient communication with members of the public phoning to request emergency ambulance services, and with ambulance dispatchers, ambulance officers and other health professionals.

The main responsibilities for a call taker are:

  • Answering incoming calls to the Communications Centre
  • Providing timely support and accurate advice to callers, including emergency first aid advice where required while an ambulance is being dispatched
  • Liaising effectively with the ambulance dispatchers
  • Accurately triaging and inputting ambulance request details into the Communications Centre computer system
  • Contributing to the goals and objectives of the Communication Centre and Ambulance services
  • Providing quality customer service to the public, Ambulance services and clients (including district health boards).

Call takers receive comprehensive training and are supervised.

Attributes and skills needed

The Communications Centre Call Taker must have the following personal attributes and skills in addition to the training provided by the Communications Centres:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Good problem solving skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Manages situations to achieve positive outcomes
  • Teamwork and cooperation
  • Relationship building
  • Minimum word processing to 40 words per minute
  • Familiar with the “Windows” computer environment
