HELP FOR PREGNANT WOMAN IN HOSPITAL DASH VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
Simon Dee (Police):
About my first or second week on the job and I was just starting to get into the flow of things, and I take a triple 1 call and on the end of it the woman just says to me “I’m giving birth and I’d like an escort to hospital”. And it turned out that in actual fact her partner was driving this tiny death trap of a car, 150 through the wops, trying to get to the hospital. And we had to arrange an escort basically there on the spot. The highway unit, the nearest unit, which was a highway unit (which was appropriate), but it was 10 minutes away, who had to do a U-turn, come back around, flash the sirens, get them to put their hazards on, and then do a U-turn and escort them away. At the same time we had the dispatcher calling the Ambulance to see if they had an ambulance in the area and they could do an escort, and at one time we were thinking of actually transferring her from her car to the ambulance, but we turned out just to give her an escort. The advice I gave her was just to maintain really good control of her breathing. I told her that I wanted to hear her breathing over the phone, because generally if you can hear somebody breathing over the phone, they’re focusing on it but then you know that they’re taking deep breaths and they’re not going to hyperventilate. That was quite important. Anyway, she got to the hospital and gave birth successfully.
