WOMAN, TWO CATS AND A BIRD ESCAPE FIRE UNHARMED VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

Megan Ruru (Fire Service):

About 6 months ago I took a 111 call from an elderly woman who was screaming down the phone. She had a pot of fat on her stove which had caught fire. Obviously distraught about that happening. So I managed to get her address from her. Got her to walk out of her house with her phone, still talking to me, because I could see I couldn’t leave her alone until we got the Fire Brigade there. But she was more distraught because she had two cats and a bird in the house. She wanted to go back into the house to get these. So I had to try and stop her from re-entering the house until we could get the fire trucks there. At the same time talking to her telling her just trying to calm her down I was at the same time telling my dispatcher that this lady is threatening to go back into the house so I had to relay that message back to the fire truck. It would’ve been about three minutes I had her on the phone, to the point that, you know, I was getting to the stage where – just take deep breaths – because I thought I was going to lose her to walking back into the house. But eventually, I heard the fire engines, or the sirens, coming down the road, so once I heard that I told her to turn around, go and talk to the fireman that’s getting out of the truck and he would be able to help her. So, for me, that was a great relief. Great outcome was the fire fighters locating the two cats and the bird, and bringing them out to the home owner who was obviously delighted with this outcome, and of course myself personally, because I managed to keep her out of the house and safe.
