CALLING 111 IMMEDIATELY SAVES TRAPPED WOMAN'S LIFE

It was dark and raining heavily early one morning when a car driven by a mother of two ran off the road into a large, rain-filled ditch. Despite desperate efforts to open the doors and get out of her car, the woman found she was stuck and immediately rang 111 on her cell phone.

Ambulance Communications Centre call taker Carol Davis helped the woman stay calm and provide the necessary information – as the water was rising fast and starting to enter the woman's car.

Carol arranged for the immediate dispatch of an ambulance and the Fire Service – the Fire Service has specialist equipment to cut people out of vehicles.

The woman knew the name of the road but could not say exactly where she was, so our call taker used ingenuity and her training to help the emergency crews find the exact location quickly. Listen to this interview to find out how they did it and the outcome.
