In this edited call you will hear a young woman on the phone to the Police Communications Centre in Wellington.

The woman was driving at night in a rural area and swerved to avoid something running across the road. She lost control of her car and went over a bank. She called her friend, who then phoned 111 and told Comms what had happened.

Communicator Lisa Cutfield called the young woman on her cellphone and stayed on the line with her for 20 minutes.

The woman was able to tell Lisa which highway she was on and that she was about 14kms away from a small town, but she wasn't sure of her exact location.

Lisa coordinated an emergency response from Fire, Ambulance and Police. The Fire Service activated their sirens and the woman was asked to tell Lisa when they were getting louder and had gone past.

She was soon found and extracted from her car unhurt.
