In this real 111 call, a mother rings 111 for Ambulance because her 5-year-old son is choking. If you listen to the call, you will hear the mother telling the call taker her son has swallowed a small piece of plastic from a plastic phone, is struggling to breathe and is turning blue.

The Ambulance Communications Centre call taker arranges the dispatch of ambulance officers within the first 40 seconds of the call. He then proceeds immediately to give life saving instructions over the phone to the child’s parents, talking them through the Heimlich maneouver. By following the instructions, the father dislodges the object enabling his son to breathe again. When the ambulance officers arrive, they check the boy’s clinical condition to determine whether he requires further treatment or transport to a medical clinic or hospital.
